Church as a Safe Place
I appreciated David’s words this morning about Sojourn Church being a place were people feel comfortable ‘pulling off the mask’. Giving people space to unload baggage, be transparent, seek community without strings attached or agenda is an amazing thing. It is very liberating to come into a place where you can drop your guard and be yourself. It is a ’safe place’. There are many places that say the are a ‘Safe Place’, however, very few flesh it out. I think that many churches, pastors, Christian organizations are in some way afraid to relinquish control. The funny thing is that they are not really in control even when they think they are.
I also like the comments about living with courage, right or wrong… commit and work through. This is one of those areas that I have been wrestling with. At this point of my life, I find find myself trying to ride the fence on so many things. There is a fear… I admit it… Sometimes I am afraid to commit. Sometimes the pain of the past is haunting. It is like driving a car after you have a wreck or going swimming after you almost drown. The emotional scars last much longer than any physical trauma (most of the time). Think twice… 2nd guess… flip-flop…
Good words… It confirms things I have been wrestling with… It is one of those times I can take a huge breath, exhale, and relax.
