Turning over tables…

90 hour work week are officially over. I have pulled the cord and decided to resign my 2nd job. Although it was a blessing it was becoming more of an increasing burden and causing more tension in my life. Lately I have been meditation on the passage in Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Making an extra paycheck is nice. Being able to “afford” luxuries is nice. Not having to live on budget is nice.

But it comes at a price.

What things have I given up as a result…. Sleep, family time, bible study, prayer, time with friends, opportunity to build relationships, journey group at times…

It took a Derek Webb lyric to bring things into focus…

“because I need to tell the truth
so I’m turning over tables”

This reminded me of Jesus going into the temple and overturning the tables of the money changes and sales people in the temple.

Mark 11:15-17 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

In some ways I feel like this is what Jesus is doing in my life… He is going through and turning over tables in my life. Throwing out the things that do not belong.

This is a good thing!!! It is my desire for my life to glorify God in everything I do. I want to be on mission with Jesus. I believe it requires spiritual house cleaning.

  1. Such a visual. Never looked at it that way. I’ve quietly used the phrase, “Beat the shit out of me.” Somehow the word ’sin’ doesn’t hold quite the graphic potency as shit. Having been raised on a farm, the statement conjures up many a vision from the recesses of my mind.

Daily sin taints every motive, and to be free of this cannot come too soon.
